Colerain Township to Implement Police Assistance Technology in Effort to Combat Violence

Colerain Township, Ohio, has responded to recent deadly violence in the region by investing in license plate reader camera technology. The decision came after a town hall discussion led by WCPO 9 News, where community members advocated for the adoption of Flock brand cameras. The Board of Trustees approved the use of $70,000 for the purchase of these cameras, with conditions regarding data collection and usage.

During the meeting, concerns were raised about potential misuse of data captured by the license plate readers, but Police Chief Edwin Cordie assured that such actions would be considered felonious. The funds allocated for the cameras will only be used if Flock representatives can address these concerns to the satisfaction of Trustee Matt Wahlert.

Some trustees questioned the need for such technology, suggesting alternatives like code enforcement to deter crime and violence. However, the majority voted to move forward with the purchase of the license plate readers.

In addition to the cameras, a cruiser tracking system was also proposed to ensure officer efficiency, with Chief Cordie mentioning that this technology was already in place as part of their Axon body-worn camera systems.

A final contract for the purchase and implementation of the license plate readers is expected to be presented to the council for approval at the next meeting in February. The decision reflects the township’s commitment to addressing the recent spike in violence and ensuring the safety of its residents.
