Kyle Whittingham, Utah football coach, announces return with two words: “I’m back”

Utah football fans can breathe a sigh of relief as head coach Kyle Whittingham has confirmed he will be returning for his 21st season in 2025. After speculation about his future, Whittingham humorously mimicked Michael Jordan’s famous “I’m back” announcement by issuing a simple memo stating “I’m back.” This news comes after Utah finished the season 5-7 in their first year in the Big 12, marking only the third losing season under Whittingham’s tenure.

Whittingham has been a staple at Utah since taking over for Urban Meyer in 2004, amassing a 167-86 record over 20 seasons. He has led the team to seven seasons with 10-plus wins and 17 winning records. One of his most notable achievements was coaching Utah to a perfect 13-0 season in 2008, which culminated in a victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

Despite his return, the Utes are already planning for the future with defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley designated as the head coach in waiting. Whittingham has indicated that Scalley will have input in decision-making moving forward to ensure a smooth transition when he eventually retires.

Whittingham has also made moves to improve the team, hiring Jason Beck as the new offensive coordinator. Beck brings a wealth of experience from coaching stints at schools like Syracuse, Virginia, and BYU. The Utes hope Beck can help elevate their offense, which ranked No. 115 in the nation last season.

With Whittingham’s return and strategic planning for the future, Utah football looks poised to continue its success under his leadership in the years to come.
