Republican senators met with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, and dismissed sexual assault and other misconduct allegations against him. Senators referred to the allegations as a “side issue” and praised Hegseth’s ability to lead the Defense Department, despite the accusations. Hegseth, an Army National Guard veteran and former Fox News host, has faced numerous allegations of misconduct, including being intoxicated on the job. He has denied any wrongdoing. Senators expressed their support for Hegseth after the meeting, emphasizing his commitment to a strong military. Some senators downplayed the allegations, with Sen. Ted Cruz calling the media “obsessed” with personal allegations against Hegseth. Hegseth has faced allegations of sexual assault and being an “abuser of women” during his contentious divorce. However, he denied these accusations. Despite his past remarks suggesting women should not serve in combat roles, senators highlighted Hegseth’s ability to raise retention and recruitment levels in the military among young men and women. The Trump transition team did not comment on the Republican senators’ remarks. It is noteworthy that some lawmakers are questioning the FBI’s role in conducting background checks on Cabinet nominees, breaking from usual practice.
