Bureau of Reclamation allocates $50 million to boost restoration efforts for Great Salt Lake

The Utah Department of Natural Resource and The Office of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner have secured a $50 million grant from the Bureau of Reclamation to implement a water delivery program aimed at conserving and delivering water to the Great Salt Lake. The funding comes from the Inflation Reduction Act and will be used for ecosystem restoration projects to benefit the millions of birds that depend on the lake. This grant complements the state’s existing commitments to protect the Great Salt Lake. The funding will support the implementation of the Great Salt Lake Strategic Plan, focusing on increasing flows to the lake, investing in infrastructure for water users, restoring wetlands, and removing invasive species. With two years of above-normal snowfall and conservation efforts, Utah’s water supply has improved, leading to a rise in the Great Salt Lake levels. The Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner emphasized the importance of cooperation between the federal government, state, and local community to conserve this vital water body and prevent negative impacts on the environment, wildlife, agriculture, recreation, and industry.
