The Utah Democratic Party is working to erode the Republican supermajority in the state by reaching out to nearly one million voters this election cycle. Despite facing an uphill battle, Democrats are optimistic about the possibility of flipping a few red seats blue on Election Day. With six state House seats up for grabs, young Democratic activists are leading the charge to increase representation in the Legislature.
Republicans, on the other hand, are not taking anything for granted and have also ramped up their voter outreach efforts to maintain their supermajority. The state Senate currently has a Republican majority, while the state House has a significant Republican supermajority. Democrats hope to close the margins and potentially shift the balance of power in future elections.
The Democratic coordinated campaign effort, led by young party operatives, has focused on recruitment, fundraising, and outreach to voters using a variety of strategies, including door-knocking, mass-text campaigns, and phone calls. The party is energized by the opportunity to make Utah a battleground state and is investing in candidates to improve future candidate quality.
While some legislative districts have become less competitive since new district maps were approved by the Republican supermajority, Democrats see six state House seats as up for grabs in 2024. Even if Democrats were to win all of these seats, Republicans would still maintain a supermajority. However, the Utah Democratic Party is focused on the long game, hoping to improve party infrastructure and win over more competitive districts in the future. Voters will have the opportunity to make their voices heard on Election Day on November 5th.
