Special counsel David Weiss’s office refuted President Joe Biden’s claim that prosecutions of Hunter Biden were politically motivated by calling the allegations “baseless.” Weiss mentioned that multiple judges had already rejected Hunter Biden’s claims of vindictive prosecution. The president had issued a pardon for Hunter Biden, citing unfair and selective prosecution in cases where he was found guilty of gun-related charges in Delaware and guilty plea on tax and fraud charges in California. The court filing from Weiss’s office stated that Hunter Biden had filed eight motions to dismiss the California indictment, all of which were dismissed as meritless, including claims of vindictive and selective prosecution. The filing mentioned that similar baseless accusations made by Hunter Biden in the Delaware case were also rejected by the judge and three appeals court panels. The filing argued against automatic dismissal of the indictment due to the presidential pardon, stating that the grand jury’s decision was based on probable cause and should not be wiped away. Hunter Biden’s attorney argued for dismissal of the indictment following the pardon, but Weiss maintained that no court had supported these claims.
The White House did not respond to the filing, and Hunter Biden’s attorney argued for the judge to dismiss the indictment due to the pardon. Hunter Biden, who was set to be sentenced in both cases later in the month, remains embroiled in legal battles regarding the charges against him.
