Republican Senator Mike Rounds backs FBI director despite Trump’s pick for replacement

GOP Sen. Mike Rounds supports FBI Director Christopher Wray, stating that he was a good choice initially made by President Trump. Wray was nominated by Trump in 2017 and would need to be fired or step down voluntarily for Trump to replace him with Kash Patel. Rounds said he has no complaints about Wray’s performance so far. He mentioned that Patel and other nominees will be fairly evaluated during the Senate’s confirmation process. Rounds emphasized the importance of FBI directors serving their full 10-year terms to prevent the agency from being seen as a political tool for the president. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan also highlighted this norm, stating that Biden allowed Wray to serve out his term even though he was appointed by Trump. The Biden administration adheres to the principle that FBI directors should serve their full terms regardless of the president in office. Patel will need to go through the confirmation process before officially taking over as FBI Director. Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to Rounds’ remarks, and it remains to be seen how the nomination of Patel will play out in the Senate.
