Iran backs Assad as rebels launch aggressive offensive in Syria.

Iran has expressed strong support for Syria’s government following a surprise offensive by insurgents that captured Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, and surrounding areas. The Iranian Foreign Minister stated that they firmly support the Syrian army, which will be victorious over the terrorist groups. The insurgents, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, seized control of Aleppo International airport and forced government forces to retreat from the city center. The fighting has resulted in at least 347 fatalities, including civilians. This escalation worsens Syria’s humanitarian crisis, which has already claimed thousands of lives over the past decade.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has vowed to defend the country against terrorists and their supporters, as his armed forces mobilize reinforcements in response to the offensive. Iran’s support for Assad, along with backing from Russia, highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics in the conflict. Russia’s intervention in 2016 helped Assad secure strategic areas and maintain power, while Iran sees Syria as crucial for its regional strategy and support for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The involvement of multiple foreign actors, including the United States and Turkey, further complicates the situation. Turkey, a supporter of Syrian opposition groups, is focused on countering Kurdish-backed rebel forces near its borders, viewing them as an extension of the PKK. The U.S. opposes Assad, Russia, and Iran but has allied with Syrian Kurdish forces despite tensions with Turkey.

The ongoing conflict in Syria has devastating consequences for the civilian population, with hospitals overwhelmed and public services disrupted in Aleppo. The fighting underscores the entrenched divisions and external interests driving the conflict, with no clear resolution in sight.
