Utah Valley University’s women’s basketball team is off to a strong start this season with a 5-1 record, their best since 2007. The Wolverines will be participating in the University of San Diego’s Thanksgiving Classic, where they will face Alabama A&M on Friday and Omaha on Saturday in neutral site contests. Last week, UVU split their games, falling to LMU but bouncing back with a dominating 89-56 win over Bethesda.
Key players for the Wolverines include Amanda Barcello, who leads the team with 11.2 points per game, and Danja Stafford Collins, who is averaging 11.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The team ranks among the national leaders in several categories including steals, turnovers forced, assists, and bench points per game.
In their recent game against Bethesda, newcomers Kennedy Carlyle and Gracie Sorenson recorded double-doubles, with Carlyle contributing 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Sorenson adding 14 points and 14 rebounds. The team displayed a strong performance with all 11 players who saw the floor contributing points.
Up next, Utah Valley will face Air Force and BYU in upcoming games. Their opponents for the Thanksgiving Classic, Alabama A&M and Omaha, are both competitive teams with solid records. The Bulldogs of Alabama A&M are led by Kalia Walker’s 12.6 points per game, while Omaha has a 2-4 record and recently won a close game against Utah State. The Wolverines will look to continue their strong start to the season in these upcoming matchups.
