Former Utah Valley Youth Symphony director, Brent E. Taylor, was sentenced to at least six years in prison for sexual abuse of a child dating back 40 years. The 76-year-old was convicted of attempted sodomy on a child as well as forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies. Taylor’s abuse was brought to light when four men shared their experiences at his sentencing. Victims reported incidents dating from the 1980s to early 2000s, with one revealing a relationship with Taylor from age 12 to 19. The man retired in 2017 after a long tenure with the symphony. The Deseret News investigation in 2018 uncovered similar stories from multiple men, including former symphony employees who detailed inappropriate behavior by Taylor. Although he initially denied the charges, Taylor pleaded guilty and was sentenced after a court battle involving his purported medical issues. The case shed light on decades-long abuse by a trusted figure and the lasting impact it had on victims who only came forward years later.
