Hunger is on the rise in Utah, affecting more people than ever

Utah is facing a deepening hunger crisis, with a significant rise in the number of food-insecure families and children. Feeding America reported a surge from 93,000 food-insecure children in 2021 to 143,000 recently, representing a 53 percent increase. Ginette Bott, president of the Utah Food Bank, noted the growing demand for assistance, surpassing levels seen during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many seeking help are employed but struggle to afford food due to increasing living expenses, leaving little left for food after bills are paid.

Leaders in Utah, including Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, have acknowledged the urgency of the issue and emphasized the need for more action. Henderson highlighted efforts such as increased funding for food pantries and a renewed focus on addressing hunger in schools. While a recent attempt to eliminate sales tax on food fell through, there remains optimism that the problem can be solved. Henderson emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing gaps in the system to provide better support for those in need. The state is urged to do more to prevent families from struggling in such a prosperous time.
