Congress members from Connecticut receive bomb threats on Thanksgiving

Connecticut’s congressional delegation, including Democratic Representatives Jim Himes, Jahana Hayes, Joe Courtney, and John Larson, as well as Senator Chris Murphy, were the targets of bomb threats at their homes. No bombs were found, but the threats were deemed part of a coordinated effort. Hayes received a threatening email claiming a pipe bomb was in her mailbox, but no explosive materials were found. Himes also faced a bomb threat at his home. The lawmakers expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s swift response and emphasized that political violence has no place in the country. The incidents are under investigation by local police departments, with no charges filed yet. The U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI have not responded to requests for comment. This comes after President-elect Donald Trump’s planned administration officials were targeted with bomb and “swatting” threats earlier in the week. The Capitol Police investigated over 8,000 incidents involving threats to members of Congress last year, an increase from the previous year. The final statistics for 2024 are not yet available. Law enforcement officials are working to ensure the safety of lawmakers and address the rise in threats.
