A bipartisan coalition of 51 attorneys general led by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes issued a call for peace ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election. The attorneys general emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and condemned any acts of violence related to the election results. They urged Americans to vote, engage in civil discourse, and respect the democratic process. The coalition pledged to enforce the law against any illegal acts that threaten the democratic process.
The attorneys general’s statement comes in response to concerns about political violence surrounding the election. A Deseret News/HarrisX poll conducted in August found that over 75% of registered voters were worried about political violence before and after Election Day. The poll also revealed fears of violence from both Republicans and Democrats depending on the election outcome, with 76% of Republicans concerned about violence from Democrats if Trump wins, and 83% of Democrats worried about violence from Republicans if Harris wins.
As the nation continues to grapple with heightened tensions and concerns about potential violence, the coalition of attorneys general’s call for peace serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the rule of law. They emphasize the need for unity and civility in the post-election period, calling on Americans to come together in a shared commitment to the safety and well-being of all citizens.
