Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson spoke out on the election night problems that occurred in Utah County, where voters faced long lines and delays in casting their ballots. While not directly blaming Utah County Clerk Aaron Davidson, Henderson acknowledged a lack of planning leading to issues in the predominantly Republican county. Henderson emphasized that clerks are responsible for planning elections and her office is prepared to offer assistance if needed.
The delays in election results prompted Henderson’s office to send a state plane to retrieve more ballot paper from Arizona to prevent a shortage in Utah County. While the county ended up not needing the extra paper, Henderson stated that her office takes a proactive approach to problem-solving. Davidson, the Utah County clerk, admitted that lack of planning and encouraging in-person voting contributed to the issues on election night.
This isn’t the first time Utah County has faced election night problems, with past issues in 2018 leading to delays and criticism. Davidson has also faced controversy for tracking and revealing voting information, as well as facing calls to improve election processes after discrepancies were found in the primary election. Despite challenges and scrutiny, Henderson sees attacks and intimidation as political tactics and remains focused on ensuring fair and efficient elections in Utah.
