Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is spearheading training sessions for Republican congressional staffers to prepare them for navigating President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda through Congress using budget reconciliation. This procedural tool will allow Republicans to pass many of Trump’s tax and economic policies with their Senate majority alone, bypassing the legislative filibuster. The training sessions, hosted by Lee and the Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC), aim to familiarize staffers with the complexities of the reconciliation process. In the past, Republicans have criticized Democrats for stretching the rules to pass policies without 60 votes, but now Republicans may follow suit to advance conservative policies.
The first training session was attended by over 100 staffers, with more events planned. The goal is to equip staff with the knowledge needed to swiftly move Trump’s policies through Congress. The GOP’s 53-seat Senate majority in 2025 and 2026 will enable them to extend parts of Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act through reconciliation. Ultimately, the training aims to ensure that a broad range of Republican priorities are considered and that staff are prepared to navigate the reconciliation process effectively.
