After winning Tuesday night’s election, Republican Derek Brown is set to assume the Office of Attorney General for Utah in January. Brown initially planned to challenge current Attorney General Sean Reyes in the primary, but ended up running for the open seat.
Brown, a graduate of Brigham Young University and Pepperdine University Law School, has an extensive legal and political background. He has worked in various legal capacities, including clerking for the U.S. Court of Appeals and serving as legal counsel to U.S. senators. Brown has also been involved in Utah politics, serving as a state representative and as the Utah GOP chair.
During his campaign, Brown focused on protecting the most vulnerable, reclaiming Utah’s land from the federal government, holding big tech and big pharma accountable, and ensuring social media companies are accountable for harms to children. He has expressed his intent to continue the lawsuit for control of Utah’s public lands and to make the attorney general’s office more transparent.
Brown’s supporters, including State Rep. Jordan Teuscher, Sen. Mike Lee, and former Democratic attorney general candidate Greg Skordas, have praised his honesty, conservative values, and ability to work across party lines.
Although The Associated Press had not officially called the race for Brown at the time of reporting, he was leading by 30 points ahead of his nearest opponent. Brown’s transition into the role of Utah Attorney General is highly anticipated as he prepares to take office in January.
