The holiday season can be financially stressful, especially with rising food prices due to the pandemic. Despite a decline in inflation rates, food prices were still 1.3% higher in September 2024 compared to September 2023. The Food Bank of the Rockies in Delta has seen a significant increase in the number of families seeking assistance, with close to 500 families visiting compared to 150-200 before the pandemic.
Many individuals facing food insecurity will struggle to afford a traditional Thanksgiving meal. The Food Bank of the Rockies set up a Mobile Pantry at Delta Confluence Park to distribute turkeys and Thanksgiving essentials to over 200 families. Clients expressed gratitude for the program, mentioning that without it, they wouldn’t have been able to celebrate Thanksgiving.
The Mobile Pantry not only provided holiday-themed items but also distributed regular food staples like meat, produce, and snacks. Clients emphasized the importance of such distributions in helping them make ends meet, especially for those with large families or limited resources. The program does not require income disclosure and assists anyone in need.
For those looking to help, donations and volunteer support are crucial. Food Bank of the Rockies aims to expand its capacity to serve more residents on the Western Slope, but this relies on increased funding and community support. Each dollar donated provides three meals, and contributions can be made through the organization’s website. Overall, the Mobile Pantry and similar programs play a vital role in addressing food insecurity during the holiday season and beyond.
