A woman was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros by a civil court jury in Ireland after claiming that mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor raped and battered her in a Dublin hotel penthouse in December 2018. McGregor denied the allegations, stating that the encounter was consensual. The woman’s lawyer argued that McGregor was a devious coward who took out his anger on his client after losing a fight in Las Vegas. The woman testified that McGregor threatened to kill her, put her in a choke hold, and had sex with her against her will. However, McGregor maintained that the encounter was athletic and vigorous, but not rough, and that the woman never said ‘no’ or stopped. Police investigated the complaint but declined to bring charges due to insufficient evidence. McGregor’s lawyer told jurors to set aside their dislike of the fighter, while the defense pointed to surveillance video showing the woman kissing and hugging McGregor after they left the hotel room. McGregor refused to answer follow-up questions from police, citing advice from his lawyer. The jury ultimately ruled in favor of the woman, awarding her damages for the alleged assault. McGregor did not comment on the verdict as he left court.
