Avian flu detected at Utah dairy facilities prompts quarantine

Utah agriculture officials have confirmed cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in eight Cache County dairy facilities. The samples taken around October 23, 2024, tested positive for the virus, leading to the quarantine of affected dairies. While the CDC states that avian influenza does not pose an immediate health concern, individuals in contact with dairy cattle should monitor for symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches.

State Veterinarian Dr. Daniel Christensen emphasized the importance of surveillance and movement restrictions to prevent the spread of the disease. The impact on the food supply is expected to be minimal, with avian flu less harmful to dairy cattle than poultry. Dairy and poultry owners are advised to stay vigilant and report any signs of HPAI to the Utah State Veterinarian’s Office.

The UDAF is working on response plans and additional testing to contain the spread of the virus. The dairies must implement measures to prevent further transmission of HPAI. Overall, the goal is to minimize the impact on individual dairies while effectively managing the situation.
