Understanding the mechanics of exit polls: How are voter data collected?

Exit polls are a crucial tool on Election Day, providing a snapshot of who is voting and what is motivating their choices. Conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool, exit polls are used by media networks like ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC News to understand election trends as results come in. Voters are asked about their candidate preferences, important issues, and demographics. State-specific exit polls are conducted in key states like Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.

Exit polls are conducted at polling places across the country, with interviewers assigned to ensure a random sample of voters are included. In addition to Election Day interviews, early voters are reached through telephone polls and interviews during early in-person voting periods. All responses are anonymous, and the data is used by news organizations like NBC News to provide insight into voter behavior and attitudes.

Approximately 20,000 interviews are conducted for the national exit poll, with sample sizes of 1,500 to 2,500 respondents for state exit polls. The data from exit polls is used by the NBC News Decision Desk to help project election results and report on voter sentiments, preferences, and demographics. Exit poll results are not reported before 5 p.m. ET on Election Day, and outcomes of races are not indicated until after all polls are closed in a state. Throughout election night, the data is updated and re-weighed in real time to provide accurate information to viewers and readers.
