Teen diagnosed with E. coli faces kidney failure after dining at McDonald’s

Kamberlyn Bowler, a 15-year-old high school freshman in Colorado, has been hospitalized with kidney failure after consuming McDonald’s Quarter Pounders that were likely contaminated with E. coli due to slivered onions. At least 75 people across 13 states have been infected in the outbreak, with one death reported. Kamberlyn experienced symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, and bloody diarrhea before being diagnosed with an E. coli infection. She is currently receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital Colorado and has undergone multiple rounds of dialysis. Her mother, Brittany Randall, is uncertain about the lasting damage her daughter may experience. They plan to sue McDonald’s, along with other victims of the outbreak.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a rare complication of E. coli infection, affecting a small percentage of patients, particularly young and elderly individuals. Dr. Nicole Iovine emphasized the importance of pre-existing health in recovery from HUS. McDonald’s has expressed remorse over the situation and stated their commitment to making things right for affected customers. Food poisoning attorney Ron Simon, representing Kamberlyn and other victims, expects more cases to arise. He plans to file lawsuits to determine the source of the contamination and prevent future outbreaks. The experience has been terrifying for Kamberlyn and her family, with Randall expressing gratitude for her daughter’s quick action in seeking medical help.
