Man convicted of murdering 5 family members during argument over curfew from his teenage years

Raymond Childs III, 21, was convicted of six counts of murder, including the killing of his family members and a pregnant woman, following a shooting in Indianapolis in January 2021. The attack resulted in the deaths of Childs’ father, stepmother, sister, brother, sister’s girlfriend, and her unborn child. The incident occurred after an argument over Childs staying out late, and prosecutors stated that Childs went from room to room, shooting each victim. Childs’ 15-year-old brother survived after fleeing the house.

Childs’ initial trial ended in a mistrial due to a witness verbally confronting him in front of the jury, but a new trial resulted in his conviction. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears described the crime as unfathomable and expressed satisfaction that justice was served for the victims. Childs faces a sentencing hearing on January 7, where he could receive 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for attempted murder, and one to six years for carrying a handgun without a license.

The verdict provided closure for the victims’ families and friends, with Mears praising the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice. Childs’ attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The case highlighted the tragic and senseless nature of the crime, leaving the community and authorities grappling with the aftermath of the horrific incident.
