High school seniors in Asheville face critical decisions amidst the challenges of Hurricane Helene recovery.

After the disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene, high school seniors in Asheville, North Carolina are facing uncertainty and stress as they navigate college applications and other challenges. Max Schantz had to find internet access at a library to complete a scholarship application, while Abe Garry had to cancel an SAT test date due to the hurricane. Despite setbacks, counselors from local schools have been offering in-person sessions to help students with their applications.

Caroline Barton, a student at Carolina Day School, expressed feelings of not having a normal high school experience due to the pandemic and the hurricane. Although her home was safe, she still struggles with survivor’s guilt. Many seniors are feeling overwhelmed and stressed about falling behind on applications, as the impact of Helene lingers.

Some students, like Nathan Flaherty, have found silver linings in the midst of the challenges. He discovered a passion for volunteering and is considering a career change to combine piloting with emergency management. Despite the difficulties, students are finding ways to cope and adapt to the changes brought on by the hurricane and the ongoing pandemic.

As they return to school and continue with their college plans, seniors like Schantz are preparing for a different senior year than they had anticipated. The events of the past month have altered their perspectives and forced them to adjust their expectations for the future. Despite the uncertainties, students are finding resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
