Kentucky state Sen. Johnnie Turner, a staunch supporter of the coal industry and other causes in his Appalachian district, has passed away at the age of 76. Turner, a Republican from Harlan, died after sustaining injuries in an accident at home where he fell into an empty swimming pool while on a lawn mower.
Known for his dedication to his constituents and his commitment to the people of eastern Kentucky, Turner was praised by colleagues for his unwavering support and devotion to the region. Despite his focus on coal-related legislation, Turner also supported measures benefiting the entire state, such as a bill regarding historical racing machines.
Turner’s death leaves a vacancy in the Kentucky Senate and his name will remain on the general election ballot, with a special election likely needed to fill his seat. He was remembered as a kind and generous man, as well as an ardent champion for eastern Kentucky.
Throughout his political career, Turner served in the Kentucky House and was elected to the state Senate in 2020. His passing has left a void in the Kentucky legislature, with colleagues mourning his loss and praising his legacy of service to the people of the state.
