U.S. intelligence officials are warning that Russia and Iran may attempt to incite violence or disruptive protests in the U.S. following the election. They believe that Russian actors are planning influence efforts aimed at inciting violence and questioning the validity of the democratic system, regardless of the election outcome. Iran is also believed to be paving the way for violence through online influence operations. The U.S. has accused Iran of creating websites and social media campaigns inciting violence, such as death threats against election officials.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has consistently warned that Russia, Iran, and China have conducted propaganda operations against Americans, aiming to denigrate the democratic process. Russia supports former President Donald Trump, Iran supports Vice President Kamala Harris, and China does not have a clear favorite. All three countries are said to be prepared to exploit opportunities to exert influence in the U.S. election after Election Day.
The intelligence community is particularly concerned about Russia’s attempts to encourage violence in U.S. protests after the election, especially if Vice President Harris wins. They believe Russia would seek to undermine her presidency more aggressively than that of a different president-elect. Russia has been accused of creating and amplifying false claims against Harris and her running mate. The intelligence community expects foreign actors to conduct information operations denigrating U.S. democracy through Inauguration Day, regardless of the election outcome.
