New book reveals McConnell’s private criticism of Trump as ‘despicable’ and ‘unfit for office’

In the upcoming book “The Price of Power,” Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell is quoted as saying that the American people showed good judgment in firing former President Donald Trump in 2020 due to his erratic behavior and false claims of election fraud. McConnell was particularly sickened by the events of the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, where he described the insurrectionists as narcissistic and unfit for office, just like Trump. Despite voting to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial, McConnell believed that Trump’s actions were impeachable offenses. He also expressed anger at Trump’s racist attacks on his wife, Elaine Chao, who served as Trump’s Transportation secretary.

McConnell, known for his institutionalist views and long Senate career, was emotional when speaking to his staff after the Capitol attack, expressing appreciation for their bravery. Despite publicly feuding with Trump over the years, McConnell ultimately endorsed him earlier this year and planned to endorse the 2024 GOP nominee. However, the timing of his critical remarks about Trump, just weeks before Election Day, may not help the GOP nominee who is in a tight race with Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The Price of Power” sheds light on McConnell’s complex relationship with Trump and his reflections on the events leading up to and after Jan. 6. The book, set to be released on Oct. 29, offers a glimpse into McConnell’s thoughts on the dynamics of power and the decisions he made during a tumultuous chapter in American politics.
