China conducts military exercises around Taiwan to deter independence efforts

China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan as a warning to “independence forces” on the island after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te’s speech on National Day. The exercises, called “Joint Sword-2024B,” involved the Chinese army, navy, air force, and rocket force approaching Taiwan from different directions. China sees Lai as a separatist and troublemaker, and the drills are meant to test joint operations capability while also serving as a warning to Taiwan independence forces.

Taiwan’s defense ministry criticized the drills as irrational and provocative, while the Mainland Affairs Council highlighted Lai’s willingness to work with Beijing on global challenges. Chinese officials believe Lai is promoting Taiwan independence and increasing cross-Strait tensions for political gain. Despite concerns about Beijing’s military activities, most people in Taiwan believe an invasion in the next five years is unlikely.

The exercises around Taiwan are part of China’s efforts to maintain its sovereignty and national unity, claiming that Taiwan is a part of China. Lai emphasized in his speech that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other, and he will resist any encroachment on Taiwan’s sovereignty. China has ramped up its military activities near Taiwan, with ongoing patrols by military planes and ships, reflecting underlying tensions between Beijing and Taipei over the issue of independence.
