Trump campaign seeks additional military assistance for former president’s security

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested additional security measures due to increased threats against his life. Campaign co-manager Susie Wiles reached out to the White House Chief of Staff, asking for military assets, armored cars, protection while flying, and temporary airspace restrictions. President Joe Biden directed the Secret Service to provide the highest level of protection for Trump in response to the threats. The campaign also requested special forces service members for protection, although the Secret Service requested special operations forces to thwart potential drone attacks. Trump has faced alleged assassination attempts and been briefed on threats from Iran. The campaign has used additional tactics to be less predictable in its movements. The campaign has requested to use specialized planes for protection, but these requests have been met with inaction. However, the Secret Service stated that Trump is receiving increased protection with comprehensive enhancements to communications, resourcing, and protective operations. The Department of Defense provides aid for Trump’s protection as well. While concerns about military use for domestic purposes exist, increased support has been approved for candidates by the Defense Secretary to provide assistance to the Secret Service in detecting and protecting against various threats. Trump is receiving the same level of protection as Biden, and additional assets would violate federal law.
