Former President Donald Trump called for the death penalty for migrants who kill U.S. citizens or law enforcement officers during campaign rallies in Reno, Nevada, and Aurora, Colorado. He has also previously advocated for using the death penalty against human and drug traffickers. This comes as he intensifies his anti-immigrant rhetoric in an effort to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, whom he blames for the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
Trump has often portrayed noncitizens entering the U.S. as a threat to Americans’ safety. During his rallies, he described Aurora as “invaded and conquered” by illegal migrants and promised to “rescue” the city. He accused Harris of allowing an “army of illegal alien gang members and migrant criminals” to enter the U.S. from the third world and destroy cities like Aurora. However, Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, a Republican, refuted these claims, stating that they were not accurate.
Trump has also made unsubstantiated claims linking immigrants to violence in other states, such as suggesting that Haitian immigrants were eating local pets in Springfield, Ohio. Despite local officials denying these reports, Trump has continued to spread these narratives. His inflammatory rhetoric on immigration issues remains a central focus of his campaign messaging.
