Bethesda has released the first story expansion for their space RPG, Starfield, after a year of updates that have fixed many bugs and improved gameplay elements. The expansion, Shattered Space, introduces a new self-contained narrative centered around the cult of House Va’ruun and their planet, which has suffered a cataclysm. Players are tasked with saving the civilization, but find themselves bogged down in tedious fetch-quests and uninteresting travel mechanics.
While the main story is engaging, the overall gameplay experience is lacking in variety and excitement. The expansion fails to deliver on the promise of cosmic horror elements, instead offering repetitive gunfights and uninspired locations to explore. Despite some visually appealing aspects, such as the unique purple aesthetic, Shattered Space falls short of expectations.
The expansion, while not without its positives, ultimately feels like more of the same flawed Starfield experience. It raises doubts about whether future updates will be able to address the game’s fundamental problems, suggesting that a full-blown sequel may be needed to truly fulfill the game’s potential. As it stands, Starfield’s potential remains untapped, leaving players disappointed by its unfulfilled promise.
