Pakistan’s cricket captain Babar Azam has announced his resignation from the white-ball captaincy for the second time in 11 months. Babar cited the need to reduce his workload and focus on improving his batting form as the reasons for stepping down. This decision comes after a poor run of seven losses under his captaincy in his second stint.
Babar previously resigned from captaincy in all formats last year following Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Cricket World Cup. He returned as white-ball skipper earlier this year but faced further disappointments with Pakistan failing to advance past the group stage in the T20 World Cup.
In a statement, Babar expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team but emphasized the need to prioritize his own performance, enjoyment of batting, and spending quality time with family. His recent struggles with batting form, including a lack of fifties in his last 10 innings, have contributed to this decision.
Despite this, Test captain Shan Masood believes in Babar’s capabilities and expects him to excel in the upcoming Test series against England. The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to appoint a new white-ball captain following the Test series, as Pakistan prepares to face Australia in ODI and T20 matches in November.
The PCB’s decision on a new captain will play a crucial role in guiding the team forward after a series of setbacks under Babar’s leadership in the white-ball format.
