In response to deadly floods and landslides in Nepal, the government has deployed over 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue efforts using helicopters and motorboats. At least 32 people have been killed and 12 are missing due to incessant rains over the last 24 hours, with more possible flash floods expected in multiple rivers. This year’s extended rains are attributed to a low-pressure system over parts of neighboring India.
The monsoon rains, which occur from June to September, bring widespread death and destruction every year in the Himalayan nation, with the number of fatal floods and landslides increasing in recent years. Residents have recounted terrifying experiences, such as a truck driver whose vehicle was submerged in water up to his shoulders overnight.
Authorities are working to clear debris and reopen roads blocked by landslides, but the situation remains critical as the Koshi River in the southeast is running above the danger level. Climate change experts warn that the frequency and intensity of rain in Nepal have worsened, leading to more rain-related disasters this year.
With all domestic flights out of Kathmandu cancelled since Friday evening, the impact of the floods and landslides is widespread. International flights are still operational, but the situation remains grave as rescue efforts continue and more rain is expected until Sunday morning. The government and security personnel are working tirelessly to rescue individuals and mitigate the effects of this natural disaster.
