AJ+ and Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda awarded Emmy for documentary on Gaza war | Latest news on Israel-Palestine conflict

Palestinian journalist Bisan Owda and Al Jazeera’s AJ+ have recently been awarded an Emmy in the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story category for their documentary “It’s Bisan From Gaza – and I’m Still Alive.” The film showcases Owda’s reporting from Gaza during Israel’s assault on the territory last October, shedding light on the stories of Palestinians amidst war and devastation.

The award comes after controversy surrounding Owda’s nomination, with allegations from a pro-Israel organization that she is affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a designated terrorist organization. However, the National Academy of Television and Arts and Sciences defended the nomination, stating that no evidence was found to support the claims.

Al Jazeera has stood by Owda, describing her as a renowned journalist and influencer who brings news from Gaza to the world with a unique style. The media group denounced the allegations as baseless and an attempt to silence her reporting from the region, where over 130 journalists, including three from Al Jazeera, have been killed by Israeli forces in the past 11 months.

In addition to Owda’s recognition, Al Jazeera English’s Fault Lines received a News Emmy for Outstanding Climate, Environment, and Weather Coverage for their film “Shark Fin Hunters”. The network expressed gratitude for the awards, emphasizing the importance of quality journalism in today’s world and the dedication of their teams in delivering vital news coverage.

Overall, the accolades highlight the critical role of journalists like Owda and media organizations such as Al Jazeera in informing the public about important issues and events, despite the challenges and risks they face in conflict zones like Gaza.
