Design September creates a buzz in Brussels with a focus on sustainable and versatile design.

Brussels is celebrating design month with the annual Design September festival, which is taking place throughout the city for four weeks. The event features numerous art exhibitions and events, showcasing the vibrant art scene in Brussels.

One highlight of the festival is an exhibition by Dutch-Italian artist Jacopo Koning, titled ‘The Absurd Greet’, at the Alto Galleria jewellery store in Ixelles. Koning’s art, inspired by Dadaism, explores the randomness and chaos of modern society, with faces placed in unexpected places to challenge our perceptions.

Other exhibitions at the festival include innovative designs aimed at improving lives, such as an expandable wheelchair for children called “Hugo” created by Czech designer Jan KadÄ›ra. The exhibition ‘New Ways of Living’ curated by CityTools & Dogma focuses on sustainable living solutions to address societal, economic, and environmental challenges in European cities.

Antoine Crahay, an urban developer and lecturer, emphasizes the importance of creating flexible and sustainable building structures to address the environmental impact of rapid demolitions and reconstructions in cities.

The Czech community has been actively involved in the festival, showcasing immersive installations and innovative designs. The festival will return to Brussels in 2025. Visitors can explore the various exhibitions and events throughout the city to experience the creativity and innovation of European designers.
