Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in the US for a crucial visit to present Kyiv’s plan to end the ongoing war with Russia. He is set to meet with President Joe Biden, as well as presidential hopefuls Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, and attend sessions at the UN General Assembly. Zelenskyy urged his partners to help achieve “a shared victory for a truly just peace” in a recent video address and will also visit Washington later in the week.
During his trip, Zelenskyy visited a Pennsylvania ammunition factory producing critically needed munitions for Ukraine, thanking the US for their support and emphasizing the need for more supplies. The UK foreign secretary, David Lammy, indicated ongoing negotiations with the White House to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia. Lammy urged for “nerve and guts” during this critical time.
Meanwhile, fake news websites registered in the UK are reportedly spreading disinformation about Western companies operating in Ukraine, prompting calls for changes in the law to reveal ownership of such sites. In Kharkiv, Russia launched new strikes hitting high-rise apartment buildings, leaving at least 21 wounded. Additionally, a firefighter was killed by a Ukrainian drone in the Russia-controlled Luhansk region.
These recent events highlight the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine and the need for international support to bring an end to the war and achieve a just peace. Zelenskyy’s visit to the US aims to garner support for Kyiv’s proposals and strengthen ties with Western allies to address the ongoing crisis.
