Republican election contender Donald Trump has stated that he will not run again for the presidency of the United States if he loses the November election to Democratic rival Kamala Harris. Polls suggest that Trump and Harris are neck and neck in key swing states. Trump, who was president from 2016 to 2020, lost to Joe Biden in 2020 but refused to accept the defeat, claiming the election was “stolen”. He now faces criminal charges over efforts to overturn the election results but denies any wrongdoing and views the indictments as politically motivated. Trump has also refused to commit to unconditionally recognizing the result of November’s election. If he were to attempt a fourth campaign for the White House in 2028, Trump would be 82 years old. The election between Trump and Harris is expected to be closely contested in the battleground states that usually determine the winner. Trump’s statement that he will not run again if he loses marks a shift from his previous claims of election fraud and sets the stage for a closely watched and potentially contentious election.
