FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies responded to the Trump International Golf Club in Florida shortly after a Secret Service agent fired at a suspected assassin, Ryan Wesley Routh, who was allegedly targeting former President Donald Trump. Routh, who is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm, remains in custody. Business owners near the golf course reported that law enforcement visited their establishments to seize surveillance video within two hours of the shooting. The FBI is leading the investigation and is trying to develop a timeline of Routh’s actions before and after the incident. The FBI deleted video files from at least one business owner’s machine, potentially to preserve metadata for use in court testimony. It is not publicly known how Routh parked his vehicle or left the area after the shooting. Routh’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 23, at which point he may enter a plea. Law enforcement experts suggest that the seized surveillance video and witness interviews may provide insight into Routh’s motives and contacts. The FBI’s actions are in line with standard procedure for ongoing prosecutions, to ensure the preservation of evidence for court proceedings. The investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on Trump continues.
