North Korea conducted tests of new tactical ballistic missiles with super-large warheads and modified cruise missiles as leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger conventional weapons and nuclear capabilities. Kim stated that these tests were necessary due to the grave threat posed by outside forces to the country’s security. The North Korean military fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, marking the second round of missile tests in a week.
The tests included a new tactical ballistic missile called Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5, which was equipped with a 4.5-ton super-large warhead. Images released by state media showed a projectile hitting a target in a hilly area. South Korea reported that two ballistic missiles landed in a mountainous area in northeast North Korea.
Experts believe that the missile tested is still under development, and Russia may be interested in acquiring it if its performance can be proven through further testing. North Korea has been critical of military drills conducted by South Korea and the U.S., viewing them as preparations for war on the Korean peninsula. The allies, however, insist that the drills are defensive in nature and aimed at maintaining readiness against potential North Korean aggression.
North Korea has also tested a strategic cruise missile that has been upgraded for combat use. The country has been accused of illicit arms trade with Russia, with reports suggesting that some missiles used by Russia in the Ukraine conflict may be North Korean-made. Both Moscow and Pyongyang deny these allegations.
