The NFL experimented with a high-tech system called Hawk-Eye for measuring first downs during the preseason but has decided to stick with the traditional chains for the regular season. The decision was made after the system caused delays and was not as accurate as hoped. In tennis, Hawk-Eye is successful in determining whether a ball is in or out, but in football, there are more challenges with players blocking the cameras’ view and unclear angles. The technology may be revisited in the future, possibly in 2025, but for now, it will not be used in the 2024 season. The NFL is always looking for ways to improve the game and ensure accurate calls, but for now, fans will have to rely on the tried and true method of measuring first downs with chains on the field.
