Footage from body camera captures the last moments of Sonya Massey before she was shot and killed by a law enforcement officer

Body camera footage was released showcasing the final moments of Sonya Massey before she was fatally shot by law enforcement at her home in Springfield, Illinois. Massey, who had called the police because she thought there was a prowler outside, was shot in the face by former Sangamon County Deputy Sean Grayson, who has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. Grayson and another deputy arrived at Massey’s home and engaged in a conversation with her before the situation escalated. Massey picked up a pot from the stove, causing Grayson to threaten her with his gun. Eventually, Grayson shot Massey in the face, resulting in her death. The use-of-force review found that Grayson’s actions were not justified and that he had other options available. Grayson was subsequently fired from his position as a deputy. President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to Massey’s family and criticized the officer’s actions. Attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, suggested that race may have played a role in the shooting. The attorney praised the decision to hold Grayson without bond and called for equal justice for Massey. Grayson’s next court date is scheduled for August 26.
